Biggest Morning Tea
Cancer Council Fund Raiser
Held Friday, 25 May

Let me start off by thanking the community for their  enthusiastic support for our 4th Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

We drew over 60 people and raised $411. Thank you all for giving this cause your time and money. As the Cancer Council observes, cancer doesn’t rest. Neither should we. Your donation funds life-saving cancer research, prevention programs and cancer support services. So give yourselves a pat on the back.

A special thank you goes to Anne Mavridis, who once again took the lead in organising the event and the Valley Reserve Scout Troop for allowing us the use of their hall for free. We are also grateful to Simon Woodcock for some outstanding photos*.

Police in attendance:

  • Sen Sgt Standish - Mt Waverley Police Station

  • Sgt Postma - Mt Waverley Police Station

  • Cons Coe - Mt Waverley Police Station

  • Cons Stopinski - Glen Waverley Police Station

We had 31 NHW volunteers attend from the Monash LGA.

  • It rained the night before, it rained the early morning before, it was raining as the operation start and it just did not stop.

  • We arrived at 0840hours to setup / to beat customers, who are usually waiting. NHW volunteers were present and were setup to go.  Two cars were waiting for us to fit screws and it was raining.

  • By 0900hrs, the official start time, we had fitted 12 cars and it was raining.

  • Weather reports indicated the rain would lighten and be finished by midday.   I can assure you it did not stop and it didn’t lighten up!!!

  • The support from BUNNINGS was excellent as was the efforts by the NHW volunteers, and it was raining.

  • The members did an exceptional job in the soliciting of vehicles/drivers to the operation and supporting NHW volunteers in the fitting of the SafePlate screws. ….and it was raining.

  • The rain stopped just after 1300hours, just as were finished the operation. We started to see patches of blue in the sky.

  • Several cars arrived after 1300 hours and we fitted the Safeplate screws, the rains seemed to increase patrons at Bunnings, which reflected in our good result.   Let me assure you, I did not appreciate the rain!

  • Nevertheless 218 cars were fitted with security screws, 120 Safeplate brochures were handed out and 1000+ public were spoken to by Police and NHW volunteers.

Vehicles were also checked for brake lights operating correctly.

NHW Monash also fitted Safeplate security screws from the Mount Waverley Police Station between the 8/10/18 to 12/10/2018, resulting in an additional 50 cars.

NHW Mt View

Afternoon Meeting

Winter Chocolate Delights

Tuesday, 3 July at 2.15 pm

Mount View NHW enjoyed their chocolate delights last Tuesday afternoon and were treated to an interesting talk by our Crime Prevention Officer, SC Jo Pokiri.

Jo shared with us some of her

background and her career

with VicPol which she joined

in 2010. In that time she

experienced a number of

Police roles prior to gaining

her first appointment as

a CPO within the City of

Boroondara.

Jo talked about her role as a CPO as being a pro-active role rather than the normal re-active role of most police. The role also involves following up victims of crime and providing them with support and advice in coping with the trauma created.

Sound advice was also given  about personal safety and options to make your home more secure. Jo used some of her experiences to illustrate how to avoid being targeted and becoming  a victim. She also reviewed the level of crime and said that there was a general and welcome decline in Monash.

A very competent and informative presentation - thanks Jo.
